I'm a stickler for reading books before I see the movie, that being said, movie Marlena is coming across waaay more troublesome than book Marlena - she's just asking for it!
However, maybe this character/story development bridges the gap between "I met my boss' wife" and "I'm so in love with her" - never quite made assumed leap when reading... just me?
